Chasing the romance of early flight — from Victorian balloon ascents to the rivals of the 1913 air races. Stories, artefacts and pictures from a life lived a little closer to the clouds.
The story so far
I'm fascinated by the people who first dared to leave the ground — the balloonists, the barnstormers, the rivals who raced biplanes across England while the Daily Mail shouted the news from every street corner. This is where I gather it all: long-form articles, photographs of original artefacts, podcast conversations, films, and a gallery of imagery from the golden age of the air.
Some of it is free to everyone. Some of it — the deeper dives and the rarer finds — lives behind a small subscription that keeps the lanterns lit and the research going.
